HEALTH ISSUES IN RAMADAN

As we gradually take each day of Ramadan as it comes, there is bound to be some strain on the body, especially to the body that didn't practice fasting prior to Ramadan. This post seeks to identify some of these urgent health concerns and also first aid solutions to them in sha Allah.
HEADACHES
This is the most common health issue during the month of Ramadan, and it has many causes. It could be as a result of hypoglycemia (low sugar levels) , dehydration, hunger or inadequate rest. To manage this condition, endeavor never to miss the Sahur meals, which should comprise a moderate and balanced diet. Sufficient fluid should be taken too. A dose of paracetamol will also go a long way to help manage and reduce the risk of having a headache. Also try to avoid the full glare of the sun by wearing sunglasses and hats. The Nabiyy SAW has told us to eat the sahur, for that's what differentiates our fast from others. What a bundle of wisdom! Masha Allah.

HEARTBURN
Even though fasting reduces the amount of acid produced, the thought or smell of food could trigger the brain to produce more acid thence causing heartburn. The stomach is generally an acidic environment programmed to digest food and kill bacteria. If however too much acid is produced, there is a high tendency of experiencing heartburn. Some of the recommended medication to use are antacids or antihistamines. You can also control the extent of heartburn by eating in moderation, avoiding oily and spicy foods and reducing caffeine intake. Sometimes, sleeping while the head is slightly raised can help too.

DEHYDRATION
This condition can hardly be avoided during Ramadan. This is because throughout the day of Ramadan, the body is constantly in the process of losing waters and salts without replacement. The loss can be through sweating, urination or physical exertion. If you do not properly hydrate yourself before a fast, you stand s higher risk to be dehydrated. Therefore, it's highly recommended to drink lots of water during both the sahur and the iftar. dehydration can cause severe health complications such as fainting, dizziness, disorientation, and lethargy. If you faint due to dehydration those around should raise your legs above your head to ensure blood flow to the brain, and you should be rehydrated urgently with a water and sugar/ salt solution or with lucozade. This should be done immediately you regain consciousness. Alternatively, you should be rushed to the hospital.

CONSTIPATION
Because our pattern of eating has changed, there is a likely possibility of constipation. To prevent this, one should maintain good hydration, and also incorporate lots of fruits and Fibre in our daily meals.

STRESS
This and fatigue can hardly be avoided during this month, putting into consideration the prolonged periods of ibadah, the lack of sufficient sleep and lack of food. The best thing to do is to ensure one doesn't undertake to do above one's capability. And Allah hasn't placed upon us a burden more than we can handle.

I wish us optimum health because that's what we need to ensure a fulfilled month. All the opinions in this article are basic, and should not replace the opinions of a certified medical practitioner. In the event of serious complications arising out of fasting, please consult your doctor.
Masalam.
