FOOD, NUTRITION IN RAMADAN

Apart from ensuring optimum spiritual activity, the holy month of Ramadan also enables us detoxify and essentially give our bodies the rest it needs. Remember that we spend 11 months eating and drinking 2/4/7 and anytime we desire, in effect, our livers, guts etc are always performing one activity or the other. So this month is such a blessing to us in several different ways Masha Allah. Alhamdulilah.

Though our sense of nutrition has been blurred by the numerous culinary options available, researchers have continually found immense benefits in the food items recommended to us over 1400 years ago. I'll proceed now to highlight some of these foods and I hope we choose to incorporate them into our daily meals, because there is nothing that has been recommended to us but that it has immense benefits. In sha Allah.
DATES

Good old dates. They never cease to amaze, just like their honey counterpart. Dates are the most mentioned fruits in the Noble Qur'an Masha Allah. And they are replete with vitamins and minerals which among other things Give strength to its consumer, little wonder the Tahnik is highly recommended for newly born babies. ( Tahnik, where dates are softened and rubbed on the palate / gums of babies) .  The Nabiyy SAW also said that the home with no dates is like a home with no food- Sahih Muslim. In this wise, I try to ensure that there are dates in a saucer on my dining table, it's open to guests and visitors alike. Masha Allah. Also, for those who are fasting, what better way to break your fast than with fresh or dry dates and a sip of water? The Nabiyy SAW said ' when one of you break the fast, let him do it with dates, for they are a blessing and if he cannot find dates, then water, for it is a purification - hadith Tirmidhi. So there you have it, snack on either fresh or dry dates and accumulate many barakah. In sha Allah.

OLIVE OIL

Allah SWT swears by the Olive (Q95:1). Its so blessed. Ibn Umar said : The Messenger of Allah SAW said ; use olive oil as a condiment with bread, and smear your bodies with it, for it comes from a blessed tree' - Sahih Al jaami. It has numerous incredible benefits and powers. If properly used, it can cure one who has been afflicted by the evil eye or witchcraft, it's a highly beneficial moisturizer, I have an uncle who uses the olive oil as body lotion for himself and his entire family. May Allah protect them. Olive oil is particularly useful in preventing heart attacks and regulating cholesterol. Though purchasing it and using for large scale cooking could be daunting because of its cost, it's nonetheless satisfying to use this oil for cooking.

HONEY

The blessed drink of paradise. If you are lucky to get the undiluted original one, you will understand better the implications of this attribute. it's a great antibiotic, it heals burns in incredible ways, it's a natural sweetener. Allah SWT mentions in Q16:68-69 'there comes forth from the bee's belly, a drink of varying colors wherein is a healing for men' Allahu akbar. The Nabiyy SAW also was reported to have said that ' make use of two cures, the Quran and honey - ibn majah. Honey can be added to sauces and stews, it can be used as a spread, it can be mixed with shea butter and olive oil for a power moisturizer. My sister has a friend who uses honey as face mask every night. She has the smoothest and freshest face I have ever seen Masha Allah.

VINEGAR
This acidic wonder will give a thing to your meals. The Nabiyy SAW said that any home which has vinegar is not devoid of condiments - Tirmidhi. Hence we are encouraged to make use of this condiment for our meals.
